“Do not forget to show hospitality to strangers, for by so doing some people have shown hospitality to angels without knowing it.” – Hebrews 13:2

Too often we walk by ‘Unsung Heroes’ and ‘Unknown Saints’ in our lives. Some may dispute the facts I am about to present, but if you read this carefully you will understand just what I am trying to say to you.

An ‘Unsung Hero’ is someone who lives an everyday life…someone who wakes up, washes up, dresses up, and shows up to work…now..not just ANY person, but that one person everyone looks to for help. The one person they know that if they need an extra pair of hands they will be there. This is the kind of person who slips you the extra bit of fries with your order…the one who refills your glass without being asked…the one who helps an old person across the road, or carries their bags when they see them struggling….this is a person who calls the police when they see a crime instead of walking away because “It’s got nothing to do with me”…the one who returns a wallet filled with money to the owner without thought of keeping it for themselves….

Know anyone like that?

Someone of such good heart and character they instantly spring to mind?

Exactly..you may see videos of them on websites jumping into a raging river to save a kitten, or smashing in a window of a car to pull a person out of a burning vehicle……

These are people…ordinary everyday people who do not do this for glory, or honors…the ones who simply melt away in the crowd…

To be an unsung hero is to be instant in action for the right.

Not everyone doing this superhero job is saving someone….maybe it is just someone who offers the smile and friendly joke to you while you are checking out that makes your day a little brighter….someone who lets a person go in front of them in a line of many people…someone who brings you a cup of coffee or tea when they see you so busy you cannot do it yourself at work….yes…you DO know someone like that, don’t you.

Let’s move on….

‘Unknown Saint’…oh..these are my favorites…

These are the ones who REALLY hide in the shadows, yet their goodness and charity and hard work shine a light so bright the entire WORLD can see…these are not the politicians, or police people…not the firemen or ambulance workers…no…these are SPECIAL people…

These are the ones who, by their simple gifts, help see others through their darkest hour.

They may be like Randy Koga, who sacrificed EVERYTHING to become a rabbit rescuer, and who has inspired others to take up the torch of saving abandoned animals….or like Isabelle Hernandez or Lea Black who go to great lengths to help those in poverty and despair…raising those people above the line of sight so they can be seen and aided…

OR…like Amanda Pierce-Bruscella…whose quiet writings of faith and family have inspired ME to be a better person…I cannot tell you how often I doubted my faith, but then she would post her daily thought and I would (momentarily) feel my shame, then pick up my sword and fight on.

Or how about those most people hear NOTHING about…the people who help that person out in front of them in line by giving them that extra few pennies to obtain their purchase…? Ever had that happen? You are short a mere FRACTION of a few cents to purchase that much needed meal, or that bottle of milk needed for your child, and some unknown saint will just lay the required amount down and not even make a noise about it?

I know I HAVE….I have been in that situation, where pennies can make or break me eating that day…and someone simply slid a nickel, or a quarter onto the counter and brushed off my thanks with a “forget about it”…

What about the ones who are on a VERY tight budget, yet still delve into whatever meager supplies they have to help that homeless person in the alley?

Or the ones who dig in their closet taking out blankets and clothes because someone else lost everything in a fire or flood?

See….you DO know those people…THEY ARE (perhaps) YOU!

Not everyone is cut out for this role..nope…there are some who turn a blind eye, or an empty hand, away whenever they see poverty, injustice, or need….they simply do not wish ‘to get involved’.

I see laws being passed making it ‘illegal’ to be homeless..as if somehow THAT is the answer…we make them homeless, or destitute, and then make it illegal to be that way.

Big business does not care about whom they lay off, or if those people can find more work, or if they have a family to feed…they just care about their own rich profits and pockets…

And then when the poor are dotting their oh-so-pristine view of their lives, BECAUSE THEY CREATED THEM TO BEGIN WITH, they marginalize or decry “The poor are a menace”…and then seek to eradicate them from their sight by lobbying the OTHER rich to pass laws prohibiting them being poor.

I cannot help but shake my head in wonder.

We see them…if we have a heart…laying there in alleys…or under roadways….bitter in their despair, and looking for ANY hand that will lift them up and make them ‘human’ again..

And then in walk our unknown saints… poor people as well, yet willing to share with those less fortunate than they…a bit of food…warm clothes..perhaps a dollar or two…whatever they can give.

They see them as HUMAN BEINGS…not trash…or the scraps of paper left bowing in the wind…or some diseased leaf on the ground…BUT HUMANS..with blood..heart..and a SOUL.

You know, my Master warned of days such as this a long time ago…He also warned others what would happen to them should they ignore their fellow man (OR COMPANION!) in poverty…

“When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit on his glorious throne.

All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate the people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats.

He will put the sheep on his right and the goats on his left.

“Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world.

For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in,

I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’

“Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink.

When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you?

When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’

“The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’

“Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels.

For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me.’

“They also will answer, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help you?’

“He will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.’

“Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life.”” – Matthew 25:31-46

I see ‘Unsung heroes and Unknown Saints’ every day…believe it or not…oh yes…from where I sit atop the world perch of my home I can see across the miles and around the world these glowing and shining souls..

It is they…these people of common caliber….who inspire me…they make me see faith in a new light, raise my spirits, and give me hope for when our days here have been spent…

So…seen anyone like this lately? …oh yes…I know you have….If so, SHOW THEM APPRECIATION…give them a smile, a nod, a hug, or a kindly word…for they too may need THEIR ‘Unsung Hero’ or ‘Unknown Saint’ in their moment of despair or want…

Show them the same love they in turn will show you…for in the end, all that really matters is that you loved, and were loved in return…

“And now these three remain: faith, hope and love.

But the greatest of these is love.” – 1 Corinthians 13:13

So, to all of those Unsung Heroes…and Unknown Saints… I, the least of these, extend my hand and heart…my love and light to those I HAVE seen, and to those I KNOW will shine bright when they realize that THEY TOO are like these heroes and saints… KUDOS TO YOU, YOU SHINING LIGHT IN THE DARKNESS!

“God so loved the world that he gave his only-begotten Son, so that everyone who believes in him might not perish but might have eternal life.

For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world might be saved through him.

Whoever believes in him will not be condemned, but whoever does not believe has already been condemned, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.

And this is the verdict, that the light came into the world, but people preferred darkness to light, because their works were evil.

For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come toward the light, so that his works might not be exposed.

But whoever lives the truth comes to the light, so that his works may be clearly seen as done in God.” -John 3:16-21.
